The Bookshelf Conversations: Jean Fruth

July 6, 2022

When my daughter decided she wanted to go into photography as a career, I was worried. Since everyone who has a smartphone is a photographer now, how are you going to make any money off that? But not everyone who has the ability to use a camera phone has the talent to make their shots truly artistic. There’s a skill set that demands a good eye and patience, qualities that are lacking in most of us.

As professional photographers like Jean Fruth have proven, there is still a demand for this kind of work that is both timely and timeless. Her latest book — Grassroots Baseball: Route 66 — serves as a reminder to what is so enjoyable about the game, especially at the amatuer level, when kids play for joy and excitement, before the cares of the adult world set in.

The book is a product of the Grassroots Baseball program she co-founded.

By the way, a pox on me for forgetting the pronunciation of Jim Thome’s name.
